Draw a radius around one address
How do you draw a radius around an address?
Enter an address and a distance from 0.1 to 500 miles or kilometers. The tool creates one straight-line circle, not a drive-time area, and keeps it only for the current browser session unless you download it.
Inputs and output
The tool accepts one address, one numeric distance, and miles or kilometers. It clamps the working radius to the range from 0.1 to 500.
- The address is geocoded to one center point
- A 64-step polygon approximates the circle
- The live preview fits the generated bounds
- The download is a GeoJSON FeatureCollection containing one polygon
Example: a 10-mile delivery radius
Enter the dispatch address, choose miles, and enter 10. The resulting boundary contains locations within approximately 10 straight-line miles of that center.
- Label surrounding page copy with the center and unit
- State that roads, bridges, traffic, and exclusions are not represented
- Confirm borderline addresses through the business's real eligibility process
Radius is not road travel
The tool uses geographic straight-line distance. It does not create an isochrone, driving-distance polygon, delivery route, postcode boundary, or legal territory.
- Use a verified polygon when the real boundary is irregular
- Use an external routing service for road distance and travel time
- Treat the result as a communication aid rather than an automatic eligibility decision
Session, geocoding, and privacy notes
The generated circle is component state and is not saved as a MapsMaker project. Download it before refreshing if you need to keep it.
- Address queries go to the MapsMaker geocoding endpoint
- Geocoding results are cached for 30 days
- Anonymous cache misses are limited to 30 per minute per requester
When to open the full editor
Use MapsMaker when the map needs multiple zones, rich location records, styling, a stable share link, or an interactive website embed.
- Import the downloaded GeoJSON as a starting shape
- Add a legend, source, review date, and edge-case contact CTA
- Check current plans before promising export or embed availability
What the radius result means
A geometric radius is precise about straight-line distance but should not be described as a driving or eligibility area.
| Result | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|
| Circle on the map | One center and one chosen distance | Road network, traffic, or travel time |
| GeoJSON download | A polygon approximation of the displayed circle | An official boundary or legal territory |
| Saved service-area map | A publishing workflow in the MapsMaker editor | Automatic customer-address eligibility checks |
