Europe at a glance (reviewed 2026)

Definitions of Europe vary around transcontinental states and territories, so this page does not use an unsupported all-countries count.

  • European Union members: 27
  • Euro area members: 21
  • Schengen countries: 29 (25 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland)
  • Largest by area: Russia (transcontinental); largest entirely in Europe: Ukraine

Plan a multi-city trip

Rail and budget airlines make multi-city Europe trips practical.

  • Classic Western Europe: London → Paris → Amsterdam → Berlin → Prague
  • Mediterranean: Lisbon → Madrid → Barcelona → Rome → Athens
  • Nordic: Copenhagen → Stockholm → Helsinki → Oslo
